Dr Ian Biscoe will present the latest innovations in real-time distributed collaboration for Virtual Production at FMX, Stuttgart on May 9th.
The Trans Realities Lab (TRL) team will also provide live demonstrations of XR-IT in a DVP scenario to the attendees, including a real-time connection to mocap actors in the Eindhoven lab.
Distributed Virtual Production enables new models for real-time content creation, ones where actors, cinematographers, directors, artists, and production staff can be virtually collocated across widely distributed geographies, working together as if physically collocated. The challenge of easily connecting and managing distributed sites of engagement in the shared virtual worlds used for distributed production is delivered from the the results of the XR-IT (eXtended Realities – Intraverse Toolkit) research and development programme.
XR-IT enables remote engagement in complex XR environments through the use of a distributed computing model that supports local instancing of games engines (Unreal, and Unity), and low-latency geographic distribution of mocap data, audio/video streams, camera parameters and facial capture data, using a secure global virtual LAN model of connectivity. Beyond the issue of connecting distributed production facilities, is the challenge of coalescing physical and virtual spaces across multiple nodes of engagement into a seamless hybrid environment where all partners can work with common spatial references and orientations. XR-IT met this goal by building automated tools for spatial coalescence into new plugins for games engines.
A recent test case, using XR-IT to create a live motion-capture generated film, working simultaneously with actors and crew in studios in the Netherlands and Finland, will be presented.
XR-IT was developed in the TRL at Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) with financial support of the European Union’s European Media and Immersion Lab programme and Horizon Europe.
FMX (the Film and Media Exchange) is Europe’s most important conference for the latest in Animation, Visual Effects, Interactive and Immersive Media. Every year in spring, FMX gathers international film and media professionals in the heart of Stuttgart, including many Oscar and Emmy award winners.
