Filming in the “Metaverse”: new tools for distributed virtual production

Dr Ian Biscoe will present the latest innovations in Distributed Virtual Production (DVP) at the Virtual Production Gathering in Breda on April 9th – 10th.

The use of Virtual Production in film and live broadcast (combining real-time digital elements with physical production, as popularly employed in the creation of series like the Mandalorian, and films such as The Batman) is typically still bound to one physical production location. DVP opens the possibilities of multi-site real-time coproduction, one where actors, cinematographers, directors, artists, and production staff can be virtually collocated across widely distributed geographies, working together as if physically collocated.

Ian will discuss XR-IT (the eXtended Realities – Intraverse Toolkit) which has been developed in the Trans Realties Lab (TRL) @ Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) as a software and systems framework for distanced collaboration in high-fidelity Metaverse / Distributed Spatial Environments. It has recently been employed to enable the first multi-site, live action animation film creation process, conducted simultaneously at multiple connected studios across Europe.

The TRL team will also provide live demonstrations of XR-IT in a DVP scenario to the attendees, including a real-time connection to mocap actors in the Eindhoven lab.

XR-IT was developed with financial support of the European Union’s European Media and Immersion Lab Programme and Horizon Europe. Dr Biscoe is Professor of Transdisciplinary Design Networks and founder of the Trans Realities Lab at Design Academy Eindhoven.

The VP gathering, in its fifth incarnation, will once again bring together forward-thinking industry peers, creatives, and academics to examine the ever-evolving landscape of digital storytelling. Hosted by the Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas), this year’s event will be held under the title “Shaping the Future of Digital Storytelling”, expanding beyond the technical facets of Virtual Production (VP) to explore its game-changing impact on narrative creation.
