Dr Ian Biscoe will present the Trans Realities Lab’s research and development activity enabling the “Industrial Metaverse” at XR EXPO in Stuttgart on 9th May. He will discuss current developments, set at the intersection of the fields of low-latency networks and eXtended Reality (XR), focusing on applications and opportunities in the world of industrial collaboration and design.
Real-time collaboration across geographically distributed spaces, coalesced inside visually rich and accurate XR environments, presents incredible opportunities for all stakeholders in the industrial manufacturing and design chain to work together more without travelling more. The TRL has developed XR-IT (eXtended Realties-Intraverse Toolkit) as a software and systems platform for remote engagement in complex XR environments, employing a distributed computing model that supports local instancing of games engines (Unreal, and Unity), and low-latency geographic distribution of motion capture data, audio/video streams, engineering and physical system data, using a secure global virtual LAN model of connectivity. XR-IT also resolves issues around coalesced navigation in virtual environments that are accessed from multiple points of presence.
In the Creative Europe supported Hybrid Lab programme, we have successfully tested distributed collaboration within high-fidelity networked digital twins, across two projects where codesign, manufacture and installation of recycled plastic street furniture, 3D printed by robots, was achieved without the collaborators ever meeting, or even visiting the sites prior to final installation.
The Trans Realities Lab (TRL) team will also provide live demonstrations of using XR-IT in industrial metaverse and collaboration scenarios during the XR Expo Exhibition, at our booth in the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle, Stuttgart on 8th May; and at the XR Expo Congress in the Maritim Hotel, Stuttgart on Friday 9th May.
XR-IT was developed in the TRL at Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) with financial support of the European Union’s European Media and Immersion Lab programme and Horizon Europe.
The XR EXPO is the leading B2B event for innovative applications of immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR), collectively referred to as Extended Reality (XR). The focus is on advanced XR solutions and their practical applications in fields such as industry, architecture, healthcare, retail, and craftsmanship. XR EXPO attracts more than a thousand delegates and will feature some 100 exhibitors in the associated exhibition.

The XR EXPO is a meeting ground for professionals from Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR) and Augmented Reality (AR), or in short, eXtended Reality (XR). The focus of this event is on XR technologies and professional applications of VR, MR and AR in industry, architecture, health, trade and crafts. Will we see you there?
